Mary Ann Shadd Cary

The first African American woman to publish and edit a newspaper, Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893) used the press to claim a place for black women in political debates of the 1850's.  Born in Delaware to free black parents, in 1851 she immigrated to Canada to run a school for fugitives from slavery. From 1853 to 180 she edited the Provincial Freeman, a newspaper for black settlers in Canada, which addressed topics including abolitionlism, women's rights, and black emigration.

5ive Harts: A Novel
It's not often the word, "I know how you feel," are truly so.

For 9-year old Derrick, those words, coming from his adopted mother, would cause him to heal from his present circumstances while opening wounds to her past. Yet, what comes from both traumatic beginnings is nothing short of God's master plan being revealed.

Chardress was so hurt, so scarred and so wounded she knew she would spend the rest of her day running from God; if not the rest of her life.
